Sum 41 has always made consistently whiny pop-punk crap; I remember them being played on an alt radio station some years ago alongside Fallout Boy (worse) and the Offspring (a little better). I haven't listened to them since In Too Deep was popular, but I listened to Fake My Own Death recently and it is more of the same, but the horrible part is the music video.
They chose to add in a bunch of transparent gifs and pngs of "relevant" internet phenomena and memes, and it looks like garbage. What is it about internet references being used five years past their sell-by date makes them seem especially dated whereas other pop-culture references aren't as much? The Hell Song music video is just a bunch of celebrities and references surrounding them, but it's overall easier to watch and entertaining.
Is it the medium? The industry? The people?

They've always been corporate. It's what they do. They get their corporate overlord owners to write and produce songs for them to interpret. Like many others, their entire band is just a facade and a brand. Anyone can be made into a superstar and every song can be made into a hit with enough fine tuning. First song I heard of their new album screams D O C T O R E D. It's just garbage.
